Artist's Description
It is barely dawn and the Dhobi, or washerman has already hung out clothes to dry. I chose this scene because I loved how the numerous odd angles of the plaza above, the hut tucked under the plaza, the steps and balcony overlooking everything all were juxtaposed together. The hut under the plaza is both hidden and a focus of attention, a typical contradiction of India. I also liked the way that the telephone wires sliced across the painting connecting and dividing the painting at the same time. With the advent of cell phones and underground wiring, it is only a matter of time before telephone wires and their implied connections of communications such as these are obsolete.
